Types of Van

To help you make up your mind, here are some things you should know before beginning your search for your used van:

Kerb Weight

Kerb weight is a vehicle when it is seen in its standard specification condition. According to European Directive 95/48/EC, a vehicle’s kerb weight will take into account:

• A fuel tank that is 90% full
• A driver on board weighing 68kg
• Luggage of 7kg

Take note that any extras or accessories fitted after standard specification purchase will increase the weight and reduce payloads and towing weights accordingly.

Unladen Weight

A vehicle’s unladen weight is its weight without any goods or burden on board that is:

• Inclusive of the body and all parts which are necessary to or ordinarily used with the vehicle or trailer when it is in operation.
• Exclusive of fuel, or batteries if the motor is electrically powered.

Gross Vehicle Weight (also referred to as Maximum Authorised Mass or Permissible Maximum Weight)

When focusing on driving licences, maximum authorised mass (MAM) highlights the maximum weight of a vehicle or a trailer.

This figure includes the maximum load that the vehicle or trailer can carry safely when in motion. This specific weight is sometimes referred to as gross vehicle weight (GVW), or permissible maximum weight.

You can find these figures listed in the owner's manual, as well as often on a plate or sticker fitted to the vehicle. A gross train weight (GTW) can usually be read on this plate or sticker too.

Payload

The weight that a vehicle can carry once the kerb weight, driver, passengers and any extras or accessories fitted after the standard specification purchase has been subtracted is known as the vehicle’s payload. In effect, the payload can be gained by subtracting a vehicle’s kerb weight from its gross vehicle weight.

Small Van
